How To Organize

Our Organizing Process

Today, we wanted to expand a little on our organizing process and go through the steps to getting your nest neat! The process to getting organized isn’t difficult. The main challenge comes with all the decisions you have to make when decluttering and letting go of items you really don’t need.

Step 1 Evaluate. You need to assess your home and see where you want to start. This could be as small as one shelf or drawer and as big as one room. Your end goal can of course be to organize your whole house but, the entire process of organizing is about narrowing down so it’s best to start with a space no larger than one room. You also need to hone in on what this space will be used for, how it will be used and who will be using it. This will allow you to better make decisions on which items should stay in the room and where those items should be placed for maximum efficiency.

Step 2 Sort & Declutter. Here, we remove everything from the space, sort them into categories with like items and remove items that are no longer wanted or needed. This can definitely be the most challenging step, but we have a few tips to hopefully make it easier for you. Firstly, take breaks. If you find yourself getting overwhelmed, walk away for a while and do something relaxing. Making so many decisions is hard, you have to go easy on yourself. A second tip that we’ve talked about before if you have a large number of an item that you’re trying to narrow down, is to set a number for that item of what you think you need, and get rid of anything above that number. Lastly, create a box for any items that you are unsure or anxious about getting rid of. Label it with a date 1 year from now. If after 1 year you’ve never once gone looking for that item, you can get rid of it.

Step 3 Organize, obviously our favorite step 😊This step can get a little complicated and will require some mathematical brain power. You have to map out where everything is going to go and do some measuring to determine how items will fit and what containers will work best if you plan on using them. We highly recommend containing your items as we’ve said before, since this will give you the best chance of keeping your home organized and your system sustainable.

Step 4 Contain & Label. This step is the most satisfying because you get to put everything away and see the end result. Contain your like items and put them in their designated homes. This might require a little bit of rearranging to get it all perfect. Once everything is in place, labeling is the very last thing to do. Keep your labels as generic as possible so they can encompass new items when necessary.
