Holiday Decor Storage

January is a time for resets and resolutions. It’s also the time when you are putting away all of your holiday décor, and we want to help you do it in the most effective way so holiday decorating next year is a breeze.

Here are some supplies you’ll need.

1.        Newspaper/foam (for wrapping fragile items)

2.     Totes/bins (to sort and store everything in)

3.        Specialty bags for tree, wreath and ornaments

4.       Labels (so everything is easy to find)

TIP: This is the perfect time to edit your decorations. Chances are if you didn’t use it this year, you won’t use it again. Donate or regift anything you didn’t use, this way you have all the space for the items you truly love.

General Holiday Décor Storage

For storing your holiday décor, we recommend sorting your decorations by room with exceptions made for specialty items like trees, wreaths and ornaments. For instance, place all of your décor for your mantel/fireplace into one bin and label as Fireplace Christmas Decor. You can also make it broader and do one bin for each room, i.e. Family Room Christmas Décor, Dining Room Christmas Décor, etc. just depending on how much decorations you have. Then, come next year, you won’t be pulling everything out trying to remember what goes where. If you have a lot of décor, you may be able to fill multiple bins for each room/area, otherwise, you can put all of your smaller bins labeled by room into one larger bin labeled as Holiday or Christmas Décor.

TIP: Color code your labels or even your bins to help you easily spot your holiday décor bins when you need to take them down!

Tree, Wreath & Ornament Storage

I like to store all of my Christmas Tree Décor in a separate bin, so all of the ornaments, lights, ribbon and tree skirt are all in one bin. If you have a lot of ornaments, ornament bins would probably be best and then you can have one other separate bin for the rest of your Christmas tree décor and non-fragile ornaments.

TIP: Take pictures of each decorated area in your house so you can easily remember how every item was used!

Christmas Light Storage

We talked about storing your Christmas lights earlier this week but it’s worth repeating. If you want frustration-free Christmas lights, storing them on reels is the only way to go. After you wrap them onto reels, you can store them in whichever bins you prefer or even hang them up in your garage if you have the space and setup. We recommend sorting them by color and bulb size so it’s easy to find the lights you want.

TIP: Throw out any broken strands and replace bulbs & fuses BEFORE putting away. You won’t get to it later, I promise. Also, store your extra bulbs and light timers in a separate bin. You can place the extra bulb bins with the matching lights if you prefer or label them in a way so you know which bulbs go with which strands of lights.
